Dear Freshman Me: Let me tell you a story from next month. I’m sure you’re excited to visit your older brother for a Michigan State Football game in a few weeks. It will be a great weekend full of family and football. Mom and dad will pick you up Friday night, and for the first time this semester, you’ll be able to go to sleep before midnight. In fact, you’ll actually wake up at 3 a.m. because you’re used to only getting four or five hours of sleep, and you should be waking up by now if you were in bed by 10:30 p.m. On this night, you’ll get twice as much sleep as you’ve gotten any night all semester.

Perhaps no single person did more to establish Hillsdale College than Ransom Dunn, the “Grand Old Man” who wore many hats over the course of his five decades of service to the College. As we celebrate the 176th anniversary of Hillsdale’s founding this month, it’s fitting to take a look at one of Hillsdale’s most influential leaders, a man whose vision still guides the College today.
