Something to Say: Duane “Dutch” Van Fleet Survived the Vietnam War to Thrive at Hillsdale College

Duane “Dutch” Van Fleet, ’73, a decorated Vietnam War veteran is grateful for what Hillsdale College did for him when he returned from combat. After being wounded twice in battle and surviving some of the bloodiest and brutal fighting of the war, Van Fleet came home to his native Reading, Michigan, and said Hillsdale College “saved me from me.”

Phi Sigs Share Campus Experience with New Gathering Place

Phi Sigma Epsilon closed its doors in the late 1980s. With only an empty lot as a reminder, that wasn’t the end of the story. In 2016, Phi Sig Alumni Chapter President Doug McPherson, ’76, came up with a pavilion idea, the Phi Sig Pavilion project, and concept for their property that they will donate to the College.

Museum Studies Class Displays Hillsdale’s Best

Still Going Strong: Former Charger Tennis Captain John Scott, ’72, Continues to Play the Game He Loves

John Scott, ’72, said he never had a chance to play a match of high school tennis because he wasn’t good enough to crack his team’s lineup. He still tried out for the Charger tennis team, and eventually became the number one singles and doubles player and had a chance to perform against some of the best college competition in Michigan.

Captain Comeback: Former Charger Softball Standout Julie Maloney Bianchi Now Leading in Education

A severe knee injury didn’t stop Julie Maloney Bianchi, ’91, from chasing her softball dreams. Julie, a first-team All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference performer in ’90 and ’91, became a key contributor on the powerhouse teams that were recently inducted into the Hillsdale Athletic Hall of Fame.
