Disability Accommodations

Hillsdale College

Do you need support for a documented disability?

Hillsdale College is dedicated to the sound learning of all its students. In this spirit, the College assists students who may have a disability to gain appropriate access to the curriculum and the campus community. When a student requests accommodations for a documented disability, the College works with that student to determine and coordinate reasonable accommodations designed to facilitate learning and participation with campus life.

If you need an accommodation due to a disability, please contact Aaron Petersen, the Accommodations Coordinator and Dean of Men, or Rebekah Dell, the Associate Dean of Women, to arrange a meeting. Their offices are on the 4th floor of Central Hall, and they may be reached at (517) 607-2331 or (517) 607-2333 or they may be emailed at [email protected] or [email protected]. Prior to your meeting, it would be helpful if you complete the Accommodations Request Form.

Are the disability accommodations effective?

The Deans oversee the wellbeing of all the students, and this includes the coordination of appropriate accommodations for student disabilities.  Good communication is essential in determining and coordinating ongoing, effective accommodation plans. If anything about an accommodation appears ineffective or requires adjustment or modification, please follow the procedure outlined below.*

  1. Make an appointment with the appropriate dean to review the matter. Your dean will review the issue with you and a determination will be made and communicated to you in writing or via electronic mail within five (5) working days.
  2. If the determination is still in need of modification or adjustment, you may review the matter again with either the dean already consulted or with the standing Disability Support Committee, which consists of three members of the College administration. This Committee is accessed by completing an Accommodations Review Form available through the dean’s office or upon request via email. Once again, any revision to the determination will be communicated in writing within five (5) working days.
  3. If, despite these determinations and reviews, the accommodations remain ineffective, you may ask that the matter be addressed by the Vice President of Student Affairs and the College Provost. These officers will respond to the request in a reasonable time frame.

*In accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Hillsdale College has established these procedures to ensure that students with documented disabilities have reasonable access to all aspects of college life.
