Health Services

College can be a time when various medical, psychological, emotional, academic, or relational concerns arise. Hillsdale College Health Services is available to help students address these concerns before they have a negative impact. Our trained medical and counseling staff have extensive experience in treating many of the issues that develop for college students. If needed, referrals to more specialized help can also be facilitated.

All health records and discussions with the medical staff, counselors, and other staff members are private and confidential.

The Ambler Health and Wellness Center has a registered nurse on duty during all operating hours. There is no charge for the nurse’s service or to administer common medications.

A doctor is available from 1:00-4:00 pm daily. Please call ahead to schedule an appointment at (517) 607-4368. There is a fee of $50 to see the doctor. Ask about payment options when you call to schedule your appointment.

All students must have a health insurance card, or if under a company plan, a copy of insurance policy numbers, along with the policyholder’s name, Social Security number, and place of employment.

Kari L. Coupland, R.N., B.S.N.

Kari is a registered nurse, who completed her B.S.N. at Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA. After college, Kari worked on step-down intensive care unit at Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn, MI, for two years before moving to William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, MI.  At Beaumont, she worked in the emergency center, a level-1 trauma center, specializing in cardiac care.  After nine years at Beaumont, Kari worked as an emergency center nurse for two years at St. Mary’s Hospital in Saginaw, MI.  Prior to coming to Hillsdale College, Kari worked at Hillsdale Hospital in the emergency center for 13 years.  In her free time, Kari likes bike riding, hiking, gardening, traveling, and spending time with family and friends.  Kari lives in Jonesville, MI, with her husband Dan and her three children: Quinn, Raegan, and Riley.

Dr. Chris Netley was born and raised in Southern California. He graduated from the University of California, Riverside with a Bachelor of Science in Anthropology and became a Doctor of Chiropractic at Southern California University of Health Sciences. He is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and a proud husband and father.

Dr. Netley has been a chiropractic patient since childhood. Throughout his life, chiropractic care has played a pivotal role in pain management and performance enhancement.

As a sports chiropractor and a strength and conditioning specialist, Dr. Netley’s goal is to help patients attain the knowledge and skills that will allow them to move, function and compete pain free without restrictions. He helps patients live independently by reducing the need for continuous treatment. A book he recommends to everyone, patients and friends, is The Checklist Manifesto (Atul Gawande)

Dr. Netley’s vision is to improve performance and quality of life. He is honored to serve as a healthcare provider at Hillsdale College.

Denise Lovinger, RDN, CDCES

Denise is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist and a Certified Diabetes Educator with 30 years of experience in nutrition counseling and education. She earned her BS in Nutrition at Purdue University and completed a Clinical Internship at the University of Iowa.

Denise provides individual counseling to help you better fuel your body for improved health, athletic performance or academic success, improve your relationship with food or manage a chronic disease. Denise utilizes an intuitive eating approach, provides research-based nutrition information and believes that all foods fit into a healthy lifestyle.

Denise and her husband, Jack, have 2 daughters and a grandson. Denise enjoys spending time with her family, travel, hiking and photographing nature.

Counseling is available at no cost for problems related to: depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, alcohol/other drugs problems, ADHD, family conflicts, relationship problems, academic concerns, spiritual growth, or other life challenges. Brock received his Master’s Degree in Community Counseling from John Carroll University. In the past 20 years, he has received advanced training and/or certification in substance abuse/addiction, eating disorders, and clinical supervision and also has clinical experience with depression, anxiety disorders, and family systems. Brock married his wife, Jennifer, after they both graduated from Hillsdale in 1998. They have four children. Brock enjoys football, backpacking, good conversations, and spending time with his wife and kids. Some of Brock’s favorite books are Man’s Search for Meaning (Viktor Frankl), Abba’s Child (Brennan Manning), Return of the Prodigal Son (Henri Nouwen), The Praying Life (Paul Miller), and Celebration of Discipline (Richard Foster).

Kaitlyn Zellner is a Licensed Professional Counselor. She holds her National Certified Counselor credential as well as a Clinical Trauma Professional certification (level 2). She received her undergraduate degree in Clinical/Counseling Psychology at Kutztown University and her MA in Counseling at Missio Seminary.  Her experience includes working with people who struggle with depression, anxiety, grief, trauma, adoption, and general life difficulties – where she uses a trauma-informed, strengths-based approach to wholeness and healing.

Becky Galvan is a 2013 Hillsdale College alumnus. During her time as a student, Becky competed as a member of the Hillsdale Track and Field team. She received her undergraduate degree in Psychology at Hillsdale and her MA in Mental Health Counseling at Spring Arbor University. Becky works with individuals facing a variety of problems and she has specific training for eating disorder treatment.

A few of her favorite books are Try Softer (Kolber), The Five Love Languages (Chapman), Radical Candor (Scott), None Like Him and In His Image (Wilkin).

Todd comes to Hillsdale College with a great deal of experience that helps him connect and counsel others. Having served in the U.S. Air Force and as a civilian police officer as a K-9 handler and trainer, he likes to say counseling is his fourth career and is the one he most enjoys. He is married with two grown children (both of whom graduated from Hillsdale College) and one grandchild. Todd is EMDR trained and works with many people who have experienced traumas in their lives, he also works with depression and anxiety and helps others find meaning in life. His favorite book is “A Man’s Search for Meaning” and he has many of his clients read it. He enjoys spending time with his family and being in the outdoors hunting and fishing.

Linda received her master’s degree in social work from the University of Michigan. For over 20 years, she has had training and experience working in various settings including community mental health, outpatient substance use, and inpatient behavioral health assisting individuals to address mood disorders, substance use disorders, trauma, anxiety, grief and loss, as well as general concerns. She is married and has two young adult children. Linda has been a member of the Hillsdale Wind Symphony for the past 20 years. She enjoys walking, reading, cooking and baking, especially experimenting with new recipes. Favorite books include books related to the Holocaust or WWII.

Hannah incorporates art-making and the creative process into counseling sessions.  Her areas of focus include grief, relationship issues, anxiety and emotional growth.

Brietta received her Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Michigan. Over the last 10 years she has had training and experience working in a senior center, inpatient psychiatric care, and the college setting; guiding individuals through depression, anxiety, grief, and family systems. Brietta is married to her husband Tyler, and they have one daughter. Brietta enjoys going for walks with her family, musical theatre, a fun competitive game, and attempting to replicate goodies from The Great British Baking Show. One of her favorite books is Let’s All be Brave (Annie F. Downs).

Father Adam is an ordained minister in the Anglican Church in North America, where he has served several congregations as pastor before focusing on the chaplaincy at Hillsdale. He has masters degrees from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and Boston College School of Theology and Ministry. His ministry on campus focuses on leadership development, spiritual formation, teaching, and leading evening services in Christ Chapel. He also provides one-on-one pastoral counseling in a variety of areas, with a focus on applying the gospel to life’s challenges, learning to pray, navigating relationships, and freedom from pornography. He has been married to his wife, Katherine, since 2012, who is the Assistant Director and Accompanist for the Christ Chapel Choir. They have two children, Julian and Michaela. Adam enjoys classic movies, reading history, good conversations, and learning new things. Some of his favorite books are Divine Conspiracy (Willard), Life Together (Bonhoeffer), A Grief Observed (Lewis), Crafting a Rule of Life (Macchia), On the Incarnation (Athanasius), Holiness (Ryle), The Book of Common Prayer, and of course the Psalms.
