Hillsdale College is seeking a Director of Science Laboratories and Safety. This is a full-time position that begins December 1, 2019. A Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or a closely related field is required; a Master’s degree or higher is preferred.

Responsibilities include

1. Chemical Management
Maintain an adequate stock of laboratory supplies, cylinder gases, and chemicals. Maintain an updated chemical inventory. Oversee the storage and disposal of chemical waste.

2. Lab Set-up and Support
Set up and tear down (with stockroom student staff) general, organic, and introductory chemistry labs. Coordinate with the faculty member that is responsible for each individual laboratory course. Be available in the stockroom during the running of all undergraduate laboratories during the academic year and the summer session.

3. Student Supervision
Hire and supervise the stockroom student staff.

4. Science Safety Officer
Maintain chemical safety protocols and regulatory files for the science departments. Coordinate
safety inspections and address laboratory safety concerns in conjunction with science faculty.
Serve as point person for laboratory environmental and safety issues and compliance.

5. Instrumentation and Facilities Maintenance
Coordinate servicing and maintenance of purified water systems, balances, ventilation hoods,
and lab instrumentation. Order cryogens, gases, and consumables as needed for required
instruments.
