Biography

Dr. Yaniga grew up in a small town near Cleveland, Ohio. He spent his senior year of high school in Hamburg, Germany, before pursuing studies in German and political science as an undergraduate. While a student in Germany in 1989, he witnessed and participated in the fall of the Berlin Wall before returning to the U.S. to complete his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees at Washington University in St. Louis.
 
Dr. Yaniga lived for many years in Austria and Germany as a student and teacher, receiving a Fulbright grant to Vienna, and teaching as a visiting lecturer at the Eberhard Karls Universität in Tübingen, Germany. At Hillsdale College, he teaches a wide range of courses from beginning- to advanced-level German, including courses on German Film, History of the German Language, Business German, and Pedagogy of Foreign Languages. Dr. Yaniga was honored in 2013 with the Emily Daugherty Award for Teaching Excellence. He lives with Monica, his wife of 20+ years, and their three children in Somerset, Michigan.
