The early years of childhood are invaluable in laying a strong foundation for success in school and in life. Influences made upon children during these formative years have lasting effects. Providing young children with engaging experiences to support their physical, emotional, social, and intellectual growth while extending their understanding of themselves, others, and the world around prepares them for all future learning.
My philosophy of education is twofold. First and foremost, the value of early childhood education is tremendous, as its influence has the power to set the stage for all future academic endeavors. Quality preschool programs provide the setting and materials that encourage children to interact with and explore the world around them in a developmentally appropriate, safe environment. Focus is placed on supporting and nurturing the development of the whole child: physically, emotionally, socially, and cognitively. Second, college students studying early childhood education learn best in the same manner: observing, interacting, and engaging in a real preschool environment with early childhood professionals and preschool children. My mission is to cultivate and nurture the minds and hearts of both preschoolers and college students through providing experiences that will engage and enrich their lives.
Hillsdale College is a unique place in which the focus is placed upon nurturing and challenging the minds and hearts of its students. The experience college students receive here serves to develop their whole being through a rigorous core of studies. The small class sizes found at Hillsdale allow for personal relationships to develop among faculty and students, providing a collaborative and supportive learning experience.
The benefit of studying early childhood education in particular at Hillsdale College is without a doubt the on-campus observatory/laboratory preschool. College students at Hillsdale do not just hear lectures and read textbooks in the Early Childhood Education Department. The laboratory component of our courses allows for college students to gain real-world experiences and see the implementation of what they are learning in the classroom. College students gain much experience and practice from interacting directly with preschoolers while under the supportive supervision of the highly educated staff at Mary Randall Preschool.
