Biography

It was the spring of 1975. I was sitting with my track teammate, Gerry, in the back row of an accounting class at Aquinas College. Our teacher, Mr. Corradini, was reading a letter he had received from the University of Detroit, inviting students to apply for the position of graduate assistant in their M.B.A. program. Graduate assistants would be able to earn a master’s degree in return for doing work for a professor and by teaching introductory accounting courses.

I can still remember elbowing Gerry (who is now a partner with a national CPA firm) and saying “Yeah, right! Imagine me teaching an accounting class!” A few months later, I was teaching my first accounting class at the University of Detroit.

In addition to the M.B.A., in the following years I earned Certified Public Accountant and Certified Management Accountant designations and a Ph.D. in accounting from the University of Kentucky. Work included a stint in public accounting, but my heart remained in education. My teaching career had already spanned over 25 years at several institutions before my arrival at Hillsdale in 1996. I didn’t know it then, but I had finally found the place where I was meant to be.
