Biography
I joined the Economics, Business, and Accounting Department as an assistant professor of finance and economics in 2018 from Allegheny College. My research areas are in empirical asset pricing and applied time-series econometrics. My research helps us understand how uncertainty, at the macro level, affects asset prices. Given the greater importance that financial markets are playing in the economy, understanding the mechanisms that drive prices is necessary to understand their social impact.
I have a background in teaching econometrics, statistics, corporate finance, real estate, managerial economics, and macroeconomics. In the classroom, I strive to situate finance within a historical context, which is sadly underutilized in our field. It is only by drawing connections between seemingly unrelated subjects and creating a unified story that students gain a thorough understanding of a particular field.
Outside of the classroom, I really enjoy guiding students in a personal way and trying to elicit knowledge through one-on-one discussions. As pointed out by Gilbert Highet, Socrates “wanted to make every pupil realize that truth was in the pupil’s own power to find, if he searched long enough and hard enough…” This idea of the teacher as a facilitator rather than an imparter of knowledge is one that I have seen pay the largest dividends with regard to student development. Additionally, having students wrestle with the material and come out on the other side unscathed imparts a confidence and facility that cannot be rivaled by any other method.
