Christina Lambert

A Big Fan of the Liberal Arts

Written by Taylor Kemmeter

While there are many kinds of students—scientists, musicians, or the like—it takes a very special, open-minded kind of person to be a liberal arts student. Christina Lambert, of Temecula, California, is such a person. When asked, “What is your major?” she smiled and replied, “That’s the joke.”

When looking for a college, she applied to nine different schools, including Hillsdale College. She thought, “I want to go to a serious science school.” Although she knew that Hillsdale College offers a fantastic science program, and she has a sister who attended Hillsdale College, Christina thought that she wanted a more specialized education. However, like many of the students at Hillsdale, she was swayed by one thing: a college visit. While sitting in an English class discussing Dante’s Purgatorio, Christina realized she had to come back and finish the course.

This foreshadowed Christina’s entire college career. She came in thinking she would major in biochemistry. After taking Western Heritage and other history classes, she changed to a history major. She continued to explore the world of Hillsdale College’s core, intrigued by Greek, history, English, and theology.

Now, during her junior year, Christina is considering an English major. While there is a good amount of overlap between English and history, Christina does not want to double major because she also wants to continue studying Greek and taking theology courses. Some people may wonder why she takes so many classes outside of her major, and Christina replies that she considers them life courses, and not just schooling.

What can be gained by a liberal arts education? Christina believes that this education is foundational to living a good life regardless of vocation. The classes move beyond the GPA and become part of leading a good life.

In Christina’s words, “I’m a big fan of the liberal arts.”
