Girl reading book

Reading Lists from English Majors

Written by Victoria Barry

My summer reading list is quite extensive (and it just keeps growing), but here is a sampling.

  1. Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh
I don’t know much about this book other than many trustworthy people highly recommend it, and it is modeled after St. Augustine’s Confessions.
  2. The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde
A journey into the heart of aestheticism. I have started this intriguing book 2 or 3 times but have never had time to finish it.
  3. No Man Is an Island by Thomas Merton
Thomas Merton was a Trappist monk and a mystic — great spiritual reading.
  4. Curdie and the Princess by George MacDonald
This is a sequel to The Princess and the Goblin, a book that explores what it means to grow up, be mature in one’s faith life, and become who you are meant to be.
  5. The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis
What better way to celebrate summer than by reading these delightful books that journey into the magical world of fauns, talking badgers, sea voyages, and woodland adventures!
