Hillsdale College’s Paul Hosmer Receives Emily Daugherty Award for Teaching Excellence

HILLSDALE, Mich. — The 2023 Emily Daugherty Award for Teaching Excellence was presented to Paul Hosmer, chair and associate professor of physics. Faculty, students, and friends of Hillsdale College recognized Hosmer at Spring Convocation on April 13. “Paul Hosmer is an excellent teacher and very deserving of this honor,” said Hillsdale College Provost Chris VanOrman. “The college is proud to have him as a distinguished member of our faculty.”

Hillsdale College Student Caleb Sampson Wins 2023 Edward Everett Prize in Oratory

HILLSDALE, Mich. — The Office of the Provost and Department of Rhetoric and Public Address at Hillsdale College hosted the annual Edward Everett Prize in Oratory on March 7. The theme of this year’s Edward Everett Prize was “Is Social Media Good for Us?” This is the 23rd year that the competition has been held. Junior Caleb Sampson won the first-place prize of $3,000.

Hillsdale College Symphony Orchestra Performs in Christ Chapel

HILLSDALE, Mich. — The College Symphony Orchestra performed in Christ Chapel on Feb. 25. The orchestra, directed by Professor of Music James A. Holleman, performed the world premiere of a symphony by composer Andrew Maxfield titled “Every Leap is Faith.” The performance was commissioned by the Barlow Endowment for Music Composition at Brigham Young University. “The college was honored to work with Andrew Maxfield,” said Holleman. “He is a talented composer, and I am proud of our orchestra students for their hard work and dedication to bringing this new piece of music to life.”

Hillsdale College Hosts Dominic Green as Spring 2023 Pulliam Fellow

HILLSDALE, Mich. — Hillsdale College hosted Washington Examiner columnist Dominic Green, as the college’s spring 2023 Eugene C. Pulliam distinguished visiting fellow in journalism from Feb. 13 to 22. Green is the author of four books. His most recent book is “The Religious Revolution: The Birth of Modern Spirituality, 1848-1898.”

Hillsdale College Director of Orchestras and Choirs Named National President of the College Orchestra Directors Association

HILLSDALE, Mich. — James Holleman, professor of music and director of orchestras and choirs at Hillsdale College, was selected to serve as the national president of the College Orchestra Directors Association. As president, Holleman will be responsible for leading the organization’s various initiatives and summer leadership seminar along with organizing the 2024 National Conference in February, set to be held at the Belmont University School of Music in Nashville.

Kelly DeVries Speaks at Hillsdale College Center for Military History and Grand Strategy

Hillsdale College Music Department Hosts Annual Student Concerto/Aria Competition

HILLSDALE, Mich. — Hillsdale College’s Music Department hosted the 2023 annual Student Concerto/Aria Competition on Feb. 5. Students participating in the competition performed solo pieces for a panel of judges in Markel Auditorium, and four students were selected to perform with the Hillsdale College Symphony Orchestra.
