Hillsdale, Mich. – Hillsdale College is proud to award the Henry Salvatori Prize for Excellence in Teaching to Golden View Classical Academy in Golden, Colorado. Established in 1996, the annual $25,000 award goes to a public or private school that exemplifies the principles of a classical liberal arts education.

“Golden View Classical Academy is an excellent example of American classical education and continues to represent Hillsdale College well,” said Dr. Kathleen O’Toole, Hillsdale College assistant provost for K-12 education. “Golden View has consistently emphasized an education that combines knowledge with moral character and civic virtue, one that teaches students how to think and prepares them to lead happy lives.”

Golden View Classical Academy award

Golden View Classical Academy, a public K-12 charter school, was established in 2015 under the auspices of Hillsdale College’s Barney Charter School Initiative. The Initiative promotes the founding of classical charter schools and excellence in their teaching and operations, to the end that public-school students may be educated in the liberal arts and sciences and receive instruction in the principles of moral character and civic virtue.

“We are grateful to be the recipients of an award that recognizes and aims to promote exceptional teaching nationwide,” said Dr. Robert Garrow, principal of Golden View Classical Academy. “Our schools are educating the hearts and minds of future leaders. Golden View Classical Academy’s mission is to teach those future leaders to learn how to think, not what to think.”

Henry Salvatori established a permanent endowment at Hillsdale College after seeing a rapid decline in American K-12 education. The objectives of the Henry Salvatori Prize include increased focus on effective teaching as the core component of education reform; support deserving schools with funds for books, equipment, and other educational materials; celebrate and promote the principles of a classical liberal arts education.
