HILLSDALE, Mich. — The John A. Halter Shooting Sports Education Center hosted the 2022 Para Trap Grand Prix from May 10-15, in tandem with the National Junior Olympic Rifle Championship at the Biermann Athletic Center. Para trap shooters from USA Shooting and overseas competed in the event, which was open to the public.

This was the College’s first opportunity to host an international competition at the Halter Center. The event included competitors from the U.S., Scotland, Great Britain, and Italy.

“Paralympic Trap Shooting is gaining traction worldwide and is set to be added as a new Paralympic event,” said Dale Royer, program and development competition manager. “We look forward to hosting future paralympic shooting events.”

The Para Trap Grand Prix is open to athletes who have a physical impairment. The discipline is based on the Olympic Trap discipline. Through the competition, athletes shoot from across five central positions on the range. Athletes shoot at 125 clays in the qualification round.

“This competition was a good start to get the competition growing within the U.S.,” said Caitlin Royer, assistant program development and competition manager. “We were happy to see folks come out and support our Para Trap Shooters.”

The event included three classes/events that athletes were eligible to compete in and began with a Para Classification Course, which was open to medical personnel interested in becoming legal classifiers of para shooting. The current classification system is under a two-year review period (September 2017 to September 2019).
