Hillsdale, Mich. – Hillsdale Academy congratulates seniors Chloe Tritchka-Stuchell and Kathryn Van Havel on being named semifinalists for the 64th annual National Merit Scholarship.

“We are proud to see two more of our students nationally recognized for their excellent academic work,” said headmaster David Diener. “Education at Hillsdale Academy is about cultivating wise and virtuous students who are prepared for life, not just for standardized tests. Nonetheless these results are an encouraging affirmation of the dedication these students have shown to their studies and of the high quality, classical education that Hillsdale Academy provides.”

Tritchka-Stuchell is the daughter of Heather Tritchka-Stuchell and Greg Stuchell. She has attended Hillsdale Academy since kindergarten, and her extracurricular involvement includes the St. Anthony of Padua Choir, Hillsdale Arts Chorale, National Honor Society, and drama.

Van Havel is the daughter of Teresa and Jeff Van Havel and has attended Hillsdale Academy since kindergarten. A Division 4 state champion in the long jump, Van Havel also participates in volleyball, basketball, chamber choir, drama, National Honor Society and student government.

Since 2001, approximately 20 percent of Hillsdale Academy graduates have received National Merit recognition, and one or more Hillsdale Academy students have been named a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist or finalist for 18 consecutive years.

The National Merit Scholarship competition is open to high school students who take the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The highest scoring students in each state are recognized as semifinalists and compete for recognition as finalists through additional criteria, including SAT scores and faculty recommendations.
