Hillsdale College Announces New Administrative Appointments
Hillsdale, Mich.— Hillsdale College announces new appointees to the roles of Dean of Faculty, Dean of Natural Sciences, Assistant Provost for K-12 Education.
“Hillsdale College faculty demonstrate extraordinary dedication to students and scholarship,” said David Whalen, Hillsdale College Provost. “We know these new appointees will continue and deepen that tradition as they employ their expertise and talent to help lead the College into the next years of service to students.”
Dean of Faculty – Mark Kalthoff
Chairman and Professor of History Mark Kalthoff will take on the role of Dean of Faculty this summer. Kalthoff holds the Henry Salvatori Chair in History and Traditional Values. He earned his undergraduate degree from Hillsdale College and his master’s and doctorate degrees in history and philosophy of science from Indiana University. He is also the 2019 recipient of the Emily Daugherty Award for Teaching Excellence. He is stepping into the role previously filled by Professor Daniel Coupland, who served as Dean of Faculty for the past two years.
Dean of Natural Sciences – Matthew Young
Associate Professor of Chemistry Matthew Young will assume the role of Dean of Natural Sciences at the start of the fall semester. He currently serves as chairman of the Chemistry Department, a role he has held since 2016. Before joining Hillsdale in 2007, Young received his undergraduate degree in chemistry at Seattle Pacific University and his doctorate in physical chemistry at Northwestern University. Young will take on the role from Professor Christopher Van Orman, who has been appointed as the new provost.
Assistant Provost for K-12 Education – Kathleen O’Toole
Kathleen O’Toole will join Hillsdale College this July in a new role created to bring together Hillsdale’s K-12 initiatives, including Hillsdale Academy and the Barney Charter School Initiative. O’Toole earned her undergraduate degree at the University of Dallas; a master’s degree in political science at Claremont Graduate University; and a doctorate in American government and political philosophy, also at Claremont Graduate University. O’Toole previously was an assistant professor of politics at Morehead State University. She is currently the headmaster of Founders Classical Academy of Leander, Texas.
