Hillsdale, Mich. — On Thursday, November 15, Hillsdale College hosted its annual fall convocation, gathering the entire college community for a traditional, academic celebration of excellence in faculty and student scholarship. During Convocation, assistant professor of politics Adam Carrington discussed the foundation of the academic community at Hillsdale College and the common pursuit of education.

“Education is as tenuous as it is precious. It is a thing in need of constant care, constant cultivation, constant defense,” Carrington said in his address to students and faculty. “Thus as we convocate, let us renew, I say, our study of the law. Let us continue to examine them as found in our chosen fields. But I especially would call on us to continue our common study, the law of human beings. Let us embrace education’s possibility. Let us further its objective. Let us be vigilant in light of its fragile, continual necessity.”

The service also honored the achievements of Hillsdale College faculty and students. College president Larry P. Arnn offered remarks and presented the prestigious Emily Daugherty Award for Teaching Excellence to assistant professor of mathematics David Gaebler.

College provost David Whalen announced the all-school GPA from spring 2018 that was 3.378 and also announced the winners of the school’s scholarship cups. Women’s fraternity Pi Beta Phi received the Sorority Scholarship Cup with a GPA of 3.415, and men’s fraternity Delta Tau Delta received the Fraternity Scholarship Cup with a GPA of 3.335.
