Hillsdale College Charger Basketball Team Earns Top G-MAC Honors
Coach John Tharp and freshman Patrick Cartier awarded Coach, Freshman of the Year accolades
Hillsdale, Mich. – Hillsdale College is proud to announce that John Tharp, head coach of the men’s basketball team, was honored with the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Coach of the Year award. Additionally, freshman forward Patrick Cartier was named the G-MAC’s Freshman of the Year. The honors were announced at the annual G-MAC Men’s Basketball Awards Banquet on Thursday, March 5.
Tharp has led the Charger men’s basketball team for 13 seasons, garnering more wins than any other basketball coach in the College’s history. With an overall record at 230-133, he has coached teams to two NCAA Division II tournament appearances. Since joining the G-MAC, Tharp’s teams have finished each season as one of the conference’s top three teams. The Chargers finished the 2019-20 season with the regular-season conference championship title and an overall record of 19-9.
Cartier was awarded the G-MAC Freshman of the Year award after leading the Chargers in points this season with an average of 16.1 per game. During the season, Cartier was twice named the G-MAC Player of the Week.
In addition to the top awards presented to Tharp and Cartier, senior Dylan Lowry was named to the GMAC all-conference first team, while juniors Austin Yarian and Davis Larson earned second-team honors.
