Hillsdale, Mich. — Hillsdale College announces the kick-off of its 2021-2022 Professional Artist Series with an exhibit of oil paintings by Maria Kreyn, a self-taught, contemporary painter whose work is inspired by Renaissance and Baroque painters. Students and community members can visit the Kreyn exhibit from Sept. 3, through Oct. 10, in the Fine Arts Building’s Daughtrey Art Gallery. All are welcome to an opening reception on Friday, Sept. 10, from 5 to 7 p.m.

“Not only is Maria Kreyn a unique talent, but her work transcends time in its mixture of the familiar and the new,” said Barbara Bushey, department chair and professor of art at Hillsdale College. “Her art is powerful enough to simultaneously fascinate the most learned artists as well as untrained eyes.”

Originally from Russia, Kreyn is a Brooklyn-based artist who studied mathematics and philosophy before apprenticing for a master painter in Norway for several years. Kreyn has been featured in Vanity Fair and her work exhibited in galleries across the United States, Europe, and China.

The exhibit is the first of this year’s Professional Artist Series, which includes a performance by men’s vocal ensemble Cantus on Sept. 11.
