Download Press Release

Hillsdale, Mich. – From October 1 to 4, Hillsdale College hosted its Center for Constructive Alternatives (CCA) seminar on Soviet Communism for more than 500 guests from across the country. Speakers included authors Mark D. Steinberg, John V. Fleming, Antony Beevor, and Daniel J. Mahoney. Other speakers were Roger Kimball, editor of The New Criterion, and Pulitzer Prize-finalist Arthur Herman.

From “The Rising Spirit of Revolution: 1905-1917” to “The Soviet Role in World War II,” the lecturers examined the Russian Revolution and its legacy in the Communist regime. The seminar concluded with a college faculty roundtable composed of Hillsdale professors Daniel Coupland, John Grant, Stephen Naumann, and Charles Steele.

Hosted four times each academic year, Hillsdale’s CCA seminars are one of the country’s largest college lecture series, drawing experts from a variety of fields to address interesting topics spanning all disciplines. CCA seminars began at Hillsdale College in 1972 and have featured more than 1,300 speakers, including Ronald Reagan, Madeleine L’Engle, James Buchanan and Steve Forbes. Previous programs explored topics such as the history of America’s two-party political system, the life of Winston Churchill, and the art of biography, among many others.

The next CCA is titled “Markets and Policy” and begins November 5. Speakers include Grace-Marie Turner, president of the Galen Institute; Larry Schweikart, author of A Patriot’s History of the United States: From Columbus’s Great Discovery to America’s Age of Entitlement; and Rich Trzupek, author of Regulators Gone Wild: How the EPA Is Ruining American Industry. All lectures are free and open to the public.

Video recordings of the most recent CCA are here. Photos of the event are available here.
