Hillsdale College Names Dr. Daniel Coupland as Dean of Faculty

Hillsdale, Mich. — Hillsdale College named Dr. Daniel Coupland dean of faculty beginning July 2017. Dr. Coupland succeeds Dr. Stephen Smith, who has served as dean for the past two academic years.

“We are grateful for Dr. Coupland’s continued commitment to Hillsdale College,” said Dr. David Whalen, Hillsdale College provost. “We look forward to the direction and leadership he will provide in his new role as dean of faculty.”

Coupland joined Hillsdale College in 2006 and is an associate professor and chairman of the education department. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Spanish from Liberty University, a master’s degree in linguistics from Oakland University, and his doctorate in education from Michigan State University. He has served as advisor for the classical education minor and the liberal arts teacher apprenticeship for the past eleven years. Dr. Coupland was Hillsdale’s Professor of the Year in 2013.

In addition to his academic pursuits, Dr. Coupland also serves on the board of directors of the Society for Classical Learning and for Arts of Liberty: A Journal on Liberal Arts and Liberal Education. He is the co-author of Well-Ordered Language, an English grammar curriculum for K–12 students.
