Hillsdale, Mich. — Hillsdale College hosted an opening reception for its newest art exhibit, titled H2O: 2 Artists’ Viewpoints of Water, on Oct. 15. The exhibit is a curated body of work that features Becky Kagan Schott, five-time Emmy-Award-winning underwater cameraman, photographer, and technical diving instructor, and Barbara Bushey, Hillsdale College Chairwoman and Professor of Art.

Kagan Schott’s work can be seen on National Geographic, Discovery Channel, and The Travel Channel and specializes in bringing back video from challenging aquatic environments. She came to campus to speak about her work on Oct. 14. The portion of work chosen for the College’s exhibit showcases shipwrecks of the Great Lakes.

“We must remember the preciousness of those bodies of water,” said Bushey. “The infinite variety of each unique wave is absorbed into the constant and enduring whole. Water is life.”

H20: 2 Artists’ Viewpoints of Water came about when the show’s curator and visiting art professor, Roxanne Kaufman, came across a photo of Kagan Schott’s and loved it.

“She thought my work might be a good complement to it,” said Bushey. “I have a piece in the show that is a direct response to one of the photos, which shows a shipwreck from above, and it is as crisp and clear as if the ship were in air, not water. That clarity is not part of my experience of the world, nor of ships on the lake’s bottom, so my response was to obscure that clarity with multiple layers of silkscreen images.”

The exhibit is the second this semester in the Daughtrey Gallery and remains open to the public through Wednesday, Nov. 24. The next exhibit will open Wednesday, Nov. 30, and include student artwork. The Daughtrey Gallery is open Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.; Saturday 10 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.; and Sunday 1 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.
