Examination of classical military history set for release on August 6

Hillsdale, Mich. – Hillsdale College announces that Professor of History Paul Rahe’s new book, Sparta’s First Attic War: The Grand Strategy of Classical Sparta, 478-446 B.C., will be released on August 6, 2019.

“Professor Rahe’s careful research has yielded a compelling account in which he invites readers to envision Greek history from the perspective of ancient Sparta,” said Professor of History Mark Kalthoff, who holds the Salvatori Chair in History and Traditional Values. “He is a dedicated scholar and fine author, and his deep understanding of ancient politics and strategy will continue to reach wide audiences through his latest work.”

Rahe’s new book begins with the dissolution of the Spartan-Athenian alliance after the Persian Wars and examines the war that followed from the perspective of the Spartans and their fellow Peloponnesians. A companion volume to Rahe’s prior books, The Spartan Regime and The Grand Strategy of Classical Sparta, his latest book argues that the demise of the Spartan-Athenian alliance was the result of opposing moral imperatives and material interests of the two ancient regimes. Sparta’s First Attic War will be included in the Yale University Library of Military History upon its release.

Rahe is a professor of history and holds the Charles O. Lee and Louise K. Lee Chair in the Western Heritage at Hillsdale College. He received the Koren Prize in 2005 for Best Article Published in French History and has been a visiting research fellow at Clare Hall in the University of Cambridge, a visiting fellow at All Souls College in the University of Oxford, the DaimlerChrysler Fellow at the American Academy in Berlin, and visiting fellow in the Social Philosophy and Policy Center at Bowling Green State University. Rahe holds bachelor’s degrees in history and Litterae Humaniores from Yale University and Oxford University, respectively, as well as a Ph.D. in history from Yale University.
