Hillsdale, Mich. — Hillsdale College today announced that seniors in the class of 2018 who took the Educational Testing Service’s Proficiency Profile standardized test scored in the 99th percentile, a significant achievement on a test that is akin to a college-level SAT. More than 113,000 students nationwide took the exam. The Hillsdale seniors’ average score of 480.2 of 500 total points was 33 points higher than the national average.

“These stellar results emphasize the effectiveness of Hillsdale’s classical liberal arts education,” said David Whalen, Hillsdale College provost. “No standardized test can hope to capture the richness of genuine learning, but the Proficiency Profile provides a helpful measure of our seniors’ ability as compared to others, nationally. We are very pleased with this indicator of our students’ achievement.”

The Proficiency Profile tests students in critical thinking, mathematics, reading, writing, humanities and sciences. The Proficiency Profile helps the College assess its educational initiatives and student performance.

The Hillsdale seniors who took the test had an average GPA of 3.51, similar to the class average, and represented a broad cross-section of majors.
