The course is based on Victor Davis Hanson’s new book, “The Dying Citizen”

HILLSDALE, Mich. — Hillsdale College released its newest free online course, “American Citizenship and Its Decline,” on Nov. 16. The course is taught by historian Victor Davis Hanson with an introduction by Hillsdale College President Larry P. Arnn.

“Dr. Hanson’s course examines the history of citizenship and the primary challenges to American citizenship today,” said Kyle Murnen, director of online learning. “Victor Davis Hanson is a beloved teacher here at Hillsdale College, and it has been a joy to work with him on this course.”

Course participants will learn about the origins of citizenship in the West and the grave threats it faces from the deep state, progressive economic policies, tribal politics, global government, and more. Knowledge of the nature and scope of these challenges is vital to the preservation of free government in America.

Topics covered in this eight-lecture course include:

  • the history of Western citizenship;
  • the middle-class and citizenship;
  • illegal immigration and national sovereignty;
  • tribalism and identity politics;
  • the administrative state;
  • the erosion of the Constitution;
  • and global citizenship.

Dr. Hanson is the Wayne and Marcia Buske Distinguished Fellow in History at Hillsdale College, a senior fellow at the Hoover Institute at Stanford University, and a military historian. His latest book is “The Dying Citizen: How Progressive Elites, Tribalism, and Globalization Are Destroying the Idea of America.”

Hanson is also the lecturer for the Hillsdale College Online Course “The Second World Wars.”  View all of the college’s online course offerings at online.hillsdale.edu. To sign up for “American Citizenship and Its Decline,” click here. For photos from the course, click here.
