Hillsdale College Welcomes Ninth Circuit Federal Judge to Campus
Judge Diarmuid O’Scannlain to speak on the politicization of the judicial branch
On Thursday, September 21, 2017, Hillsdale College will welcome Judge Diarmuid F. O’Scannlain, senior judge in U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, for a lecture presented by Hillsdale College’s Office of the President. His talk, titled “Neither Force nor Will: The Politicization of the Judicial Branch,” will draw on his 31 years of service as a federal judge to examine the shifting political role of the nation’s court systems.

Judge Diarmuid F. O’Scannlain is senior judge in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. He was appointed to the position by President Ronald Reagan on September 26, 1986, and has since worked on more than 11,000 cases and published hundreds of opinions on diverse issues. He earned his J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1963 and went on to a career in law practice and public service as Deputy Attorney General of Oregon, Public Utility Commissioner of Oregon, and Director of the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality before his investiture as a federal judge. During his tenure, O’Scannlain has also served as Chairman of the Federal Judicial Center’s Advisory Committee on Appellate Judge Education and Chairman of the International Judicial Relations Committee of the U.S. Judicial Conference, in addition to many other positions relating to judicial administration and reform, and legal education.
