Hillsdale, Mich. — Hillsdale College’s Classics Honorary, Eta Sigma Phi, recently represented the school at this year’s 89th Annual Eta Sigma Phi National Convention. Nine students traveled to the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, where the convention is hosted, competed in Certamen (a “quiz-bowl” style game about classical civilizations), and presented their research on classics.

During the convention, junior Emily Barnum was recognized for “Most Outstanding Paper” for her work on the Greek historian Herodotus. Additionally, several students placed well in the 2017 Maurine Dallas Watkins Sight Translation Contest. Senior Anne Begin took third place in Koine; senior Noah Diekemper took first in Koine, second place in Advanced Greek and third place Advanced Latin; freshman and Emma Frank took third in Intermediate Latin.

Barnum, Diekemper, and junior Shea Whitmore also had their papers accepted to next January’s Society for Classical Studies Conference in Boston, Massachusetts.
