Assistant professor of history awarded prestigious faculty honor at fall convocation

HILLSDALE, Mich. —  This year’s Emily Daugherty Award for Teaching Excellence was presented to James Strasburg, assistant professor of history, at Hillsdale College’s Fall Convocation on Nov. 11.

“James Strasburg is a prolific young scholar — also high-minded and a gifted teacher — and we are lucky to get to work with him,” said Hillsdale College President Larry P. Arnn, who presented the award.

This is Strasburg’s fourth year at Hillsdale College, where he teaches twentieth-century U.S. history, upper-level seminars on American foreign relations, American religious history, and the history of American capitalism.

Strasburg earned his Ph.D. from the University of Notre Dame. Before joining the Hillsdale College faculty, he taught at the Universität Heidelberg’s Center for American Studies.

“I’m grateful to work at an institution like Hillsdale College, where teaching and the liberal arts are so highly prized,” said Strasburg. “It is a privilege to reflect on the human condition, as well as the meaning of the true, the beautiful, and the good, with such dedicated faculty and motivated students. Our students’ commitment, intellectual curiosity, and desire to learn makes teaching at the College a true joy.”

This annual award is named in honor of Emily Daugherty, who taught in elementary and secondary schools and personified the finest traditions of the teaching profession. Daugherty devoted her life to transmitting knowledge, wisdom, and virtue to her students.
