Radio Free Hillsdale Named College Radio Station of the Year by Michigan Association of Broadcasters

Students’ work recognized in state and nationwide contests

Hillsdale, Mich. – Hillsdale College congratulates the students of WRFH/Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM, the College’s student-run radio station, on earning multiple awards, including College Radio Station of the Year, from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters and the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System.

“We are proud of our students and all of their hard work in creating some of the best radio programming in the state and indeed the country,” said Scot Bertram, general manager of WRFH/Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM. “They have dedicated themselves to producing high-quality content, and it’s satisfying to see others recognize their passion and effort.”

Students report, produce, and host a variety of news and talk programs for Radio Free Hillsdale. In addition to the College Radio Station of the Year honor, Hillsdale students received the following awards from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters:

First Place, Current Events Program:

“The Hillsdale Interview: Ajit Pai” – Stefan Kleinhenz

Second Place, Current Events Program:

“The Hillsdale Interview: John James” – Ben Dietderich

Second Place, Daily Newscast/News Feature:

“Econ 101” – Jenna Suchyta

Honorable Mention, Daily Newscast/News Feature:

“Ryan Kelly Murphy Newscast” – Ryan Kelly Murphy

First Place, On-Air Personality or Team:

“Wait, What Happened?” – Sarah Schutte, Chandler Lasch

First Place, Talk Show:

“American View” – Ben Dietderich, Jenna Suchyta

Honorable Mention, Sports Announcing Team:

“Hillsdale Academy vs. Bellevue” – Cole McNeely, Martin Petersen

The Michigan Association of Broadcasters presents its Michigan Student Broadcast Awards each year, honoring outstanding radio and television programming from both high schools and colleges across Michigan. For more information, click here.

WRFH/Radio Free Hillsdale 101.7 FM also produced eight finalists for awards handed out by the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (IBS), including one national first place winner:

Best News Interview:

Best Celebrity/Artist Interview:

Best Public Affairs Program:

“Citizen Talk” – Juan Davalos, Lynette Grundvig

Best Show Promotional Poster:

“Wait, What Happened?” – Chandler Lasch

Best Men’s Basketball Play-By-Play:

“Hillsdale Academy vs. Bellevue” – Martin Petersen, Cole McNeely

Best Baseball/Softball Play-By-Play:

“Hillsdale College vs. Findlay” – Cole McNeely, Tyler Creager

IBS’ college and high school awards programs honor excellence in student media work across more than 100 categories. The 2018-2019 awards received 2,700 submissions from schools around the country.
