Hillsdale, Mich. — Hillsdale College presents the Henry Salvatori Prize for Excellence in Teaching to Sacred Heart Academy of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Each year the award supports an institution that has demonstrated its dedication to classical education and excellence in its teaching and operations.

“Sacred Heart Academy has done an excellent job of cultivating the minds and hearts of its students through thoughtful, principled education,” said Dr. Kathleen O’Toole, assistant provost for K-12 education at Hillsdale College. “Hillsdale College is proud to honor Sacred Heart’s diligent efforts on behalf of its students with this year’s Salvatori Prize.”

Serving the Grand Rapids community with classical teaching since 2013, Sacred Heart Academy is an apostolate of Sacred Heart of Jesus parish and aims to nurture students in religious and educational disciplines. The school provides a classical curriculum, offering robust education that instructs all students in math and science, humanities, and philosophy. Students study the classical languages of Greek and Latin in order to, according to Sacred Heart Academy, “create a habit of order in the minds of students.” Several Hillsdale College alumni teach at the Academy.

The founder of the Salvatori Prize, Henry Salvatori (1901-1997), was a philanthropist and entrepreneur who established the successful Western Geophysical Company and has contributed toward supporting individuals and institutions that champion American liberty, limited government, and constitutionalism. His philanthropy toward Hillsdale College began with the first Henry Salvatori Prize for Excellence in Teaching award in 1996.

“The award is given annually to promote the prize’s three objectives:

  • Increase focus on effective teaching as the core component of education reform;
  • Support deserving schools with funds for books, equipment, and other educational materials; and
  • Celebrate and promote the principles of a classical liberal arts education.

Any applying school must have a strong Western education foundation as well as association with a 501(c)(3) institution. For more information or to apply to next year’s award, visit https://www.hillsdale.edu/educational-outreach/henry-salvatori-prize-excellence-teaching/.
