Sir Winston Churchill Exhibition at Hillsdale College Opens January 30
“The Art of Winston Churchill” features rare original paintings by Churchill, along with personal memorabilia and historical artifacts.
Hillsdale, Mich. — Hillsdale College today announced it will feature a unique exhibition of art, personal memorabilia, and historical artifacts of Sir Winston Churchill, the celebrated statesman and prime minister of the United Kingdom from 1940-1945 and 1951-1955. “The Art of Winston Churchill” exhibition will be on display in the College’s Daughtrey Gallery beginning Jan. 30 and concluding March 10.
“The Art of Winston Churchill,” organized by the National Churchill Museum at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri, features nine original paintings by Churchill, along with 12 rare pieces of memorabilia including partially smoked cigars; a top hat with signatures of Churchill, Franklin Roosevelt, and Joseph Stalin; a cast of Churchill’s hand; and items from Churchill’s famed “Iron Curtain” speech at Westminster College in 1946.
“The study of statesmanship is central to the teaching mission of Hillsdale College, and the classics teach that we can best understand the art of statesmanship by studying those who have a reputation for it,” said Larry P. Arnn, president of Hillsdale College and former student of Sir Martin Gilbert, Churchill’s official biographer from 1968 until 2012. “A close study of Churchill’s words and deeds—including his hobbies such as painting—offers timeless lessons about the principles and virtues required for great statesmanship.”
The exhibition corresponds with Hillsdale College’s Churchill Project, an undertaking by the College to promote Churchill scholarship through national conferences, scholarships, online courses, and an endowed faculty chair.
