Biography

Dr. Stephen Smith serves as dean of the humanities, the Temple Family Chair in English Literature, and professor of English at Hillsdale College. His academic focus is on Renaissance literature, particularly the dramas of William Shakespeare and the life and writings of Sir Thomas More.

Dr. Smith earned a B.A. in the program of liberal studies at the University of Notre Dame, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in literature and philosophic studies at the University of Dallas. Prior to joining Hillsdale College in 2001, he served as assistant director of the Center for Thomas More Studies at the University of Dallas. In 2006, Dr. Smith was named the Hillsdale College Professor of the Year and earned the Daugherty Award for Teaching Excellence. He is the co-editor of The Essential Works of Thomas More (Yale 2020), as well as A Thomas More Sourcebook (CUA Press). He is also a frequent essayist and book reviewer.

In 2015, Dr. Smith became dean of the faculty and chair of the English Department. In 2017, he became dean of the humanities. In 2020, he became co-director of the Center for Thomas More Studies and its websites at www.thomasmorestudies.org and www.essentialmore.org.
