Hillsdale College’s David Stewart Receives Emily Daugherty Award for Teaching Excellence
History professor awarded prestigious faculty honor at Spring Convocation
Hillsdale, Mich.— Hillsdale College congratulates Professor of History David Stewart on receiving the Emily Daugherty Award for Teaching Excellence at the College’s Spring Convocation on Thursday, April 23.
“[David] is a man of intense and elevated practical judgment,” said Larry P. Arnn, Hillsdale College president. “His colleagues say that they don’t know how they carry on without Dave, because he does so much work and doesn’t ask for anything. He’s one of our most valued colleagues.”
Stewart began his academic career teaching at Ohio State University, where he completed his master’s and doctorate in early modern European history. Stewart earned his bachelor’s degree in history from Eastern Nazarene College. He began teaching history at Hillsdale College in 1993 and earned the Curtis Seichter Award for Teaching Excellence in 2007.
While at Hillsdale College, Stewart has shared his academic work at prestigious historical conferences around the globe, including the International Studies Association’s 40th Annual Conference, Western Society for French History’s 28th Annual Conference, the Naval History Symposium in 1995, and the XVe Conference Méditerranée in 1994.
Named for elementary and secondary school teacher Emily Daugherty, the Emily Daugherty Award for Teaching Excellence honors those who have exemplified her commitment to growing knowledge, wisdom, and virtue in students. The honor has been awarded to 46 other Hillsdale College professors. Hallmarks of teaching excellence include:
