Hillsdale College Welcomes 10 New Faculty for 2020-21 Academic Year

HILLSDALE, Mich. – Hillsdale College welcomes ten new faculty members to campus for the 2020-2021 school year.

“We are excited to welcome these distinguished scholars and teachers into our academic community,” said Chris VanOrman, Hillsdale College provost. “We wish our new faculty, as well as our established faculty, the best as they begin another year of work dedicated to the liberal arts.”

Dr. Paulina Volosov, Assistant Professor of Mathematics
Dr. Charles Yost, Assistant Professor of History

Mr. George Allen earned his bachelor’s degree in English from Hillsdale College in 2009 and his master of library and information science degree at Wayne State University in 2012. Mr. Allen was the Director of Institutional Research at Hillsdale College prior to becoming Public Services Librarian in November 2019.

Dr. David Azerrad earned his bachelor’s degree from Concordia University, Montreal, in 2001; his master’s degree from Carleton University in 2003; and his Ph.D. from the University of Dallas in 2015. Azerrad works at Hillsdale College’s Van Andel Graduate School of Government in Washington, D.C. His research and writing works at focus on classical liberalism, conservative political thought, and identity politics. Prior to joining Hillsdale College, Azerrad was the director of the B. Kenneth Simon Center for Principles and Politics at The Heritage Foundation.

Ms. Lori Curtis earned her bachelor’s degree at Pacific Union College in 1980; her master’s degree at the University of California, Riverside, in 1983; and her master of library science degree at the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1987. Curtis comes to Hillsdale College from Loma Linda University, where she spearheaded the creation and development of the university’s digital archive.

Dr. Jeffrey Hertel received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Indiana University Bloomington in 2012 and 2014, respectively, and earned his Ph.D. at Duke University in 2020.

Dr. Stephanie Lauback earned her bachelor’s degree at Ohio Northern University in 2012, her master’s degree at The Ohio State University in 2015, and her Ph.D. at The Ohio State University in 2017. She worked as an assistant professor of physics at Juniata College for three years before coming to Hillsdale College.

Dr. Joseph Postell received his bachelor’s degree at Ashland University in 2001, his master’s degree at the University of Dallas in 2005, and his Ph.D. at the University of Dallas in 2010. Prior to coming to Hillsdale College, Postell worked for the Department of Political Science at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.

Dr. Jan Starczewski earned his bachelor’s degree at the University of Nice in 2004, his master’s degree from University of Wisconsin in 2007, and his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in 2018. Starczewski comes to Hillsdale College from a visiting assistant professorship at Allegheny College in Pennsylvania.

Dr. Anna Vincenzi earned her bachelor’s degree from Universita Cattolica de Sacro Cuore, Italy, in 2011; her master’s degree from the University of Notre Dame in 2016, and her Ph.D. from the University of Notre Dame in 2020. Vincenzi’s research involves the reception of the American Revolution in late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Italy.

Dr. Paulina Volosov received her bachelor’s degree in 2014 from Hillsdale College and her master’s degree and Ph.D. in 2016 and 2019, respectively, from Renssalaer Polytechnic Institute. Her research focuses on the mathematical modeling of biological systems, and of neuronal networks in particular.

Dr. Charles Yost earned his bachelor’s degree at the University of St. Thomas in 2010, his master’s degree at Columbia University in 2012, and his MMS and Ph.D. in 2014 and 2019, respectively, from the University of Notre Dame. Yost specializes in medieval religious and intellectual history and the historic relations between the Latin and Greek Churches in particular. He comes to Hillsdale College from Founders Classical Academy in Schertz, Texas, where he taught ancient and medieval history and philosophy.
