Roxanne Fogel Kaufman

Visiting Assistant Professor of Art
“I’ve said about a million times that the best thing a young photographer can do is to stay close to home. Start with your friends and family, the people who will put up with you. Discover what it means to be close to your work, to be intimate with a subject. Measure the difference between that and working with someone you don’t know as much about. Of course there are many good photographs that have nothing to do with staying close to home, and I guess what I’m really saying is that you should take pictures of something that has meaning for you…”

Prior to teaching at Hillsdale College, Kaufman taught full time at Spring Arbor University for three years, and prior to that experience, taught full time at Trine University in Angola, Indiana, for two years. Leading up to her full-time positions, Kaufman taught as a part-time art professor at a number of schools, including Hillsdale College.

As an artist, Kaufman practices and studies photography and illustration. She has been formally trained to develop photographs both in the darkroom and digitally. She states, “The darkroom is a portal to the unknown… nothing ever goes the same way twice. Time seems to stop in the glow of the safety light, and before you know it, hours have passed in the world outside. It is a captivating muse, the darkroom. She tricks you into lingering longer than you meant to.”
