HILLSDALE, Mich. — Julio Suarez and Roxanne Kaufman, members of the Hillsdale College art faculty, presented a joint art exhibit at a reception in the Daughtrey Art Gallery on Friday, Feb. 18. Students, faculty, staff, and members of the community attended.

The free exhibit, which alternates between photography and oil painting, aims to provide a focal point for moments of stillness and reflection on the value of community. The work consists of photographs and oil paintings of the artists’ colleagues, family, friends, and students.

“Our communities and connections with those we love and live with are so important,” said Kaufman. “Rather than focusing on the separation and chaos of the past couple of years, this exhibit displays the beauty of familiar faces and the comfort they bring to our lives.

Suarez emphasized art’s ability to foster community, saying, “Portraiture enables us to connect with the people around us and to express their individuality.”

The portrait exhibit is on display through Wednesday, March 30. The Daughtrey Art Gallery is open from 8 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Monday to Friday; 10 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. on Saturday; and 1 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. on Sunday.
