Hillsdale College Hosts Annual Day of Thanks
Students write thank you cards to express their gratitude to those who have supported their collegiate experience
HILLSDALE, Mich. — Hillsdale College students participated in the college’s annual Day of Thanks card-writing on Thursday, Nov. 17. The event, hosted by the Hillsdale College Student Activities Board, the 1844 Society, and the Alumni Office invited students to the Grewcock Student Union to write and address cards to friends, family, donors, professors, and others who have donated their gifts and time to the college.
“I am always amazed by all of the students that come together and express their gratitude to those who make their education possible,” said Madelyn Clark, director of student activities. “It is a great opportunity for all to take time and reflect on the many blessings in their lives such as family, friends, and professors.”
Hillsdale’s annual Day of Thanks was established by Student Affairs to elevate thankfulness on campus and give students an opportunity to express that thankfulness. The event has become increasingly popular on campus over the last five years. This year, students wrote over 4,000 cards.
One of the key objectives of Day of Thanks is to give students an opportunity to thank their scholarship donors who make it possible for them to receive a Hillsdale College education. Since Hillsdale College does not take state or federal government aid, all scholarships are privately funded. The average financial aid package for students is over $22,000, which is more than half of the total billed cost to attend. Ninety-eight percent of Hillsdale College students receive financial aid, and many are given their donor’s information on Day of Thanks so they may write a personalized letter of gratitude.
“Day of Thanks is a tangible way for students to share their gratitude for all they have been abundantly blessed with at Hillsdale College,” said Braden VanDyke, assistant director of student and young alumni programs.
Postage and delivery are all taken care of through the Student Affairs and Alumni offices, and all cards were designed by Hillsdale College students.
