Hillsdale College Lockdown

Wednesday, March 22, 2017—Hillsdale College received information from a credible third-party in regards to a potential threat from a former student. Working in conjunction with law enforcement, the college went on an all-campus lockdown today at 12:30 p.m.

The college determined that it was prudent to do this for the safety of its campus community. All students, employees, and personnel were asked to stay indoors and behind locked doors.

“The college is always going to take every step possible to ensure the safety of the campus community,” said Rich Péwé, chief administrative officer for Hillsdale College. “Under the same circumstances, the College would not hesitate to take the same action.”

The former student was apprehended outside of Hillsdale County by the Coldwater Police Department and taken into custody based on other circumstances. At 2:15 p.m., the campus was notified that the threat had ended and classes resumed.

“We appreciate the way our students responded,” said Diane Phillip, vice president for student affairs for Hillsdale College. “They were calm and respectful of the situation.”
