November 16, 2015 – Hillsdale, MI

Hillsdale College congratulates John Jordan, a senior at Hillsdale Academy, for receiving a National Merit Scholar Commendation, placing him in the top 3.3 percent of American high school students with regards to academic performance.

“We are excited to extend our congratulations to John, and I am glad to see his academic excellence being recognized,” said Hillsdale Academy headmaster Kenneth Calvert. “This commendation demonstrates how the Hillsdale Academy approach to education produces excellent scholars and continues to play an important role in American K-12 education.”

“John regularly brings both curiosity and a fresh perspective to class discussion, always being willing to think beyond conventions and to question assumptions,” said Andrew Holm, Hillsdale Academy Latin teacher.

Hillsdale Academy is an independent, classical K-12 day school located on the campus of Hillsdale College. At the Hillsdale Academy, a rigorous course of study is combined with the strong conviction that the biblical and classical virtues are necessary in the formation of the American citizen. This academically rigorous environment regularly produces scholars who exhibit excellent performance on standardized tests, as well as routine alumni matriculation at elite colleges and universities.

The National Merit Scholarship Program, which began in 1955, is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships for high school students. Approximately 1.5 millions students enter the NMSP by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test each year. From those 1.5 million, the top 50,000 students are selected to be eligible for recognition, putting commended students in the top 3.3 percent of the peers.
