Biography

Young children are innately curious about the world and seek to question, explore and understand their environment. Teachers of young children must support and facilitate the learning process. When a child’s natural desire to learn is supported and nurtured in developmentally appropriate ways during early childhood, direct instruction will improve the conditions for wonder to operate. Early literacy, for example, will support a child’s natural desire to learn by equipping a child with a vehicle through which to explore and learn about the world. I have spent years in pursuit of understanding how literacy develops in young children and how teachers can support, nurture and accelerate literacy learning in their students. As a former literacy interventionist and Reading Recovery teacher, I have taught students for whom literacy acquisition was an immense challenge. Those experiences and lessons learned through it are steeped into the classes I teach. Knowledge of both child development and early literacy are what I desire to impart to my college students.

When I am not teaching, I can be found spending time with my husband, Richard, our children and grandchildren. Together we enjoy traveling the world and visiting National Parks. While at home, I volunteer with various organizations.
