2015 Visiting Writer
On Tuesday and Wednesday, September 29 and 30, 2015, the Department of English will host a visit to campus by Mark Richard, short story writer, novelist, and screenwriter. On Tuesday evening at 8:00 pm Mr. Richard will give a reading from his fiction. On Wednesday, again at 8:00 pm, he will read from his award-winning memoir, House of Prayer No. 2. Both events are free and open to the public. Both will take place in Rooms A and B of the Dow Center.
Mark Richard was born in Lake Charles, Louisiana and grew up in Texas and Virginia. He is the author of two award-winning short story collections, The Ice at the Bottom of the World and Charity, and a bestselling novel, Fishboy. His short stories have appeared in The New Yorker, Harper’s, Esquire, GQ, The Paris Review,The Oxford American, Grand Street, Shenandoah, The Quarterly, Equator, and Antaeus. His journalism has appeared in The New York Times, Harper’s, Spin, Esquire, George, Detour, Vogue, and The Oxford American, and he has been a correspondent for the BBC. His most recent book, House of Prayer No. 2, was published in 2011.
He is the recipient of the PEN/Ernest Hemingway Award, a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship, a Whiting Foundation Writer’s Award, a New York Foundation for the Arts fellowship, the Mary Francis Hobson Medal for Arts and Letters, and a National Magazine Award for Fiction.
He has been visiting writer-in-residence at Texas Tech University, the University of California Irvine, University of Mississippi, Arizona State University, the University of the South, and the University of Southern California.
Richard also wrote the screenplay “Stop-Loss” produced by Paramount, and has been a writer/producer for CBS’s “Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior,” Showtime’s Emmy-winning series “Huff,” “Chicago Hope” on CBS, and “Party of Five” on Fox. He is currently writer/producer for AMC’s “Hell on Wheels.”
