Athletic Department Hosts Charger ESPY Awards Ceremony
HILLSDALE, Mich. — The Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) hosted the Charger ESPYs in Searle Center on April 27. The ESPYs are an awards ceremony recognizing student-athletes and staff on their accomplishments throughout the year.
Eighteen student-athletes received honors throughout the evening, in addition to the all-academic teams. Awards ranged from honors for philanthropic service, individual performance, and academics to spirit.
“It’s good for these student-athletes to be recognized for their hard work throughout the year,” said Nikki Walbright, assistant athletic director and head women’s tennis coach. “The energy and effort they give to their teams and to their academics is astounding, and we are so proud of all of them.”
Among the highest honorees were Karoline Shelton, volleyball, and Patrick Cartier, basketball, who were awarded athletes of the year for their performances at the highest level. Cartier is the first team member in history to win first-team All American honors.
Jessica Bridenthal, assistant track and field coach, was named coach of the year. Bridenthal joined the coaching staff in August 2018.
Team of the year was awarded to the varsity men’s basketball team for the team’s active pursuit and success in continuing the mission of Hillsdale College Athletics. This year the team made the NCAA Division II Elite Eight for the first time in program history.
