HILLSDALE, Mich. — Vocalist Joachim Höchbauer and pianist Sebastian Plate performed at Hillsdale College in Christ Chapel on Oct. 29. Students, faculty, staff, and members of the Hillsdale community attended the concert.

“We are thrilled to have such world-class musicians visit Hillsdale,” said Daniel Tacke, associate professor of music and chair. “Their approach to the expressive Lieder tradition is exquisite and full of depth, and it was a rare treat for all of us to enjoy this type of performance.”

During their time on campus, Höchbauer and Plate taught a masterclass for voice students on Oct. 26 and gave a presentation for music and German students about the repertoire they performed on Oct. 27. They concluded their visit with this performance, which featured selections from Schubert’s “Die Winterreise” and other German songs from the Lieder tradition.

Höchbauer first completed his studies in musical pedagogy at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München (University for Music and Performing Arts, Munich). He completed his postgraduate studies in vocal accompaniment at the Musikhochschule Köln (Cologne University of Music). He has performed with the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra, New Philharmonic Orchestra Westphalia, Bergisch Symphony Orchestra and various baroque orchestras.

Plate studied at the conservatories in Cologne and Vienna. He has worked as a pianist and conductor, and from 2009 to 2019 he taught at the conservatory in Cologne. He owns a publishing company, which he founded in 2002. Through this company he produces and publishes the work of several contemporary music composers. After a concert tour with Höchbauer, he will teach at the University of Regensburg.
