Hillsdale Academy Graduates Two National Merit Scholarship Winners
Jonah Harman and Susan Hoffman awarded highest honor in National Merit competition
Hillsdale, Mich. – Hillsdale Academy, an independent, classical K-12 school located on the campus of Hillsdale College, today celebrates two 2017 graduates for their achievements in the National Merit competition. Jonah Harman and Susan Hoffman were awarded the highest honor in the National Merit competition: a scholarship to their university of choice. Harman will attend the University of Oklahoma and Hoffman will attend Michigan State University.
“Susan and Jonah are excellent students and represent so much of the good work that is accomplished in the Hillsdale Academy classrooms each day,” said Dr. Kenneth Calvert, Hillsdale Academy headmaster. “They have joined a long list of Academy graduates who have—every year—represented the school in the National Merit competition. Susan and Jonah, as well as our five National Merit competitors in the class of 2018, have contributed to our school’s position alongside the top high schools in the state of Michigan.”
Ms. Hoffman graduated at the top of her class. She was named valedictorian and received Hillsdale College’s Merit Scholarship Award as well as a Michigan State University Special Merit Scholarship, the latter of which is based on her PSAT score. She will be attending Lyman Briggs College and Michigan State’s Honors College, where she plans to major in pre-veterinarian studies.
Mr. Harman graduated salutatorian, excelling in both academics and athletics. He was awarded the Jackson Junior Golf Tour Scholarship and participated in four years of quiz bowl competition, including the 2015 QuizBusters championship team. Mr. Harman will attend the University of Oklahoma, where he will study neuroscience and Japanese.
