HILLSDALE, Mich. — The Hillsdale College Academy for Science and Freedom’s “Statement on the Ethical Principles of Public Health” has received more than 8,300 signatures from scientists, healthcare providers, and citizens across the country — an increase of more than 2,000 signatures in the last month.

“Public health should be a concern of all citizens — not the exclusive domain of public health agencies and officials,” said Martin Kulldorff, a founding fellow at Hillsdale’s Academy for Science and Freedom. “This statement gives citizens a blueprint to demand transparency and accountability to ensure that long standing principles of public health are followed and not manipulated for political agendas.”

The Academy for Science and Freedom wrote the statement in collaboration with prominent experts from around the world from the fields of medical science, public health, and biomedical ethics. The statement outlines the necessary conditions for a humane and effective response to important public health issues. Among other items, the statement highlights the importance of informed consent, public trust in public health guidelines, and the necessity of public dialogue in the creation of public health policy.

The statement was released on Aug. 23 and was created to address U.S. public health policies enforced during the COVID-19 pandemic. The statement can be read and signed here.
