Hillsdale College Announces New Classical Education Master’s Program
The graduate degree received accreditation in January and will launch in August 2022
HILLSDALE, Mich. — Hillsdale College announces the launch of its new graduate program in classical education. Accredited by the Higher Learning Commission in January 2022, the program will officially begin in August 2022.
“Those at Hillsdale who work within the classical K-12 community have come to recognize the need for scholars and leaders,” Provost Christopher VanOrman said. “Hillsdale College sees that it is positioned well to use its knowledge, skills, resources, and experience to help meet this need.”
The degree will provide a broad philosophical, curricular, historical, literary, and pedagogical perspective on classical education for full-time, post-baccalaureate students, most of whom will be teachers or administrators at classical schools.
Between 15 and 20 students will participate in each cohort of the two-year, full-time graduate program. By the second year of operation, the estimated number of classical education graduate students is 40.
“Hillsdale College has been a leader in classical K-12 education for decades,” said Daniel Coupland, professor and chair of the education department. “We want to support and strengthen the growing number of classical schools in America today, and we see this new graduate program as a continuation of that effort.”
The estimated course load is three courses or nine credits per semester. To complete the program, students must perform a six-credit research thesis exploring an aspect of classical education. Students will take a number of electives focusing on particular disciplines within classical education. Literacy in an ancient language is an additional requirement for graduation.
