HILLSDALE, Mich. — The Hillsdale College Student Athlete Advisory Committee hosted The Charlie Awards on May 2 in the Searle Center. The annual awards show honored the athletic accomplishments of the Hillsdale College student-athletes from throughout the academic year.

“We are so proud of the accomplishments and hard work of our athletes to make this a successful year,” said Nikki Walbright, SAAC faculty advisor and assistant athletic director. “The Charlie Awards is a great way to end the year and celebrate the accomplishments of our teams and coaches.”

Student-athletes received individual honors throughout the evening for academic achievements, athletic accomplishments, team spirit, and philanthropic service. Liz Wamsley (track and field) was named the Female Athlete of the Year, and Ben Haas (track and field) was named the Male Athlete of the Year.

Head men’s basketball coach John Tharp was awarded Coach of the Year after an impressive season. In February, Tharp reached a major milestone when he won his 500th game as a collegiate head coach. The team he led, the Men’s Basketball Team, was also recognized with the Team of the Year award. In the 2022-2023 season, the team finished with a strong record of 23-7 overall and 15-5 in the G-MAC, marking the 10th time in program history that they won 23 or more games in a single season.
