Hillsdale, Mich. – Hillsdale College celebrated the dedication of The Stanton Foundation Center for American Classical Education with a luncheon, ribbon cutting ceremony, and open house on Feb. 6.

Hillsdale College President Larry P. Arnn, Assistant Provost for K-12 Education Kathleen O’Toole, and Dean of the Diana Davis Spencer Graduate School of Classical Education Daniel Coupland delivered remarks. “The college is grateful for the Stantons’ support,” said Dr. Arnn, “and will do our best, and therefore live up to the standards they have set all their lives.”

David and Laura Stanton co-founded The Stanton Foundation in 1998, which serves humanity by a commitment to education and adoption. Through this foundation, the Stantons funded the renovation of the former Mauck School Building, which has been renamed The Stanton Foundation Center for American Classical Education and serves as the home for Hillsdale’s K-12 Education Office and other educational outreach efforts.

The K-12 Education Office at Hillsdale College helps local groups found classical charter schools, provides ongoing support to school leaders and teachers, and has recently extended its services to include private schools and resources for homeschooling families. The college’s network includes more than 80 classical schools in 27 states, with a goal of expanding its efforts to all 50 states.

“The work of our office is really important. It’s locally focused. And because of the work of and the generous gifts of many people who believe in this mission we’re spreading American classical education across the country today,” said O’Toole. “It’s equipping teachers, it’s equipping students, and it’s equipping parents to remember what education is all about…studying real things in a well-rounded way, studying the humanities and the sciences, and taking your K-12 years to learn something about yourself, learn something about human beings in general, and learn something about the natural world.”

The dedication also included a brief video presentation on Hillsdale College’s efforts in K-12 education. After the lunch program concluded, guests attended a ribbon cutting ceremony and open house at the Stanton building.

About K-12 Education: An American Classical Education

Hillsdale College’s K-12 Education Office supports school administrators, teachers, and parents with the educational and organizational resources they need to educate the nation’s youth in the American and classical tradition. The Barney Charter School Initiative (BCSI), part of the College’s K-12 efforts, promotes the founding of classical charter schools and excellence in their teaching and operations so that public-school students may be educated in the liberal arts and sciences and receive instruction in the principles of moral character and civic virtue. The initiative currently has 20 member schools in 9 states. The Barney Charter School Initiative is made possible through leadership support from the Barney Family Foundation and gifts from many other friends of Hillsdale College. For more information, visit the K-12 Education website.
