The service combined Old Testament readings with classic Christmas carols and choral anthems

HILLSDALE, Mich. — Hillsdale College faculty and staff, students, friends of the college, and the surrounding community joined together in Christ Chapel on Wednesday, Dec. 8, to participate in the Chapel Choir’s first service of Advent Lessons and Carols.

The service was directed by Timothy McDonnell, director of sacred music at Hillsdale College, and featured a combination of nine Old Testament readings that foreshadow Christ’s coming interspersed with classic Christmas carols and choral anthems.

“Any opportunity to sing truths about and relish in the birth, life, and mission of Jesus Christ is most edifying,” said senior Ellen Hancock, member of the Chapel Choir. “Dr. McDonnell develops another dimension and deeper meaning for the musician, who notices more detail and experiences a deeper personal meaning with the music.”
McDonnell joined the Hillsdale College Music faculty this year. The Chapel Choir is new to the College and was created to shepherd and expand its sacred Christian music endeavors.
