Hillsdale College Choirs Perform at Christ Chapel
HILLSDALE, Mich. — The Hillsdale College Choir and Chamber Choir performed their annual spring concert on April 23 at Christ Chapel. Hillsdale College faculty, staff, students, and friends attended the concert, which was directed by James Holleman, professor of music.
The Chamber Choir opened the concert and performed pieces by Eric Whitacre, Elaine Hagenberg, and Moses Hogan, including two pieces that were written in remembrance of Holocaust victims. “Reflections from Yad Vashem” was conducted by Emiliya Smyk, a junior studying conducting and voice performance. The Hillsdale College Choir performed “Lux Aurumque” by Whitacre, directed by Hillsdale Artist/Teacher of Music Daniel Kuehler. The featured large work on the program was “Jubilate Deo” for choir, organ, and chamber orchestra and conducted by Holleman. “Jubilate Deo” is a seven-movement setting of Psalm 100, sung in eight different languages: Latin, Arabic combined with Hebrew, Mandarin Chinese, Zulu, and Spanish, with English in the finale.
Graduating seniors from the choir and chamber choir were recognized during the performance. “We are going to miss our graduating seniors,” said Holleman. “We are proud of all that they have accomplished, and we know they have many successes ahead.”
The Hillsdale College Choir is a mixed choral ensemble open to all Hillsdale College students. The Chamber Choir, under the musical direction of Holleman, is selected by audition from among the larger Hillsdale College Choir. Over 25 percent of Hillsdale College’s student body participate in one or more of the College’s music ensembles.
